Stretch marks, also called striae, initially appear as reddish or purple stripe-like marks on the skin that slowly fade to white or gray pale lines. They occur in the dermis, the inner layer of the skin, where the elastic fibbers, that allow the skin to stretch and shrink, are located. Strechmarks appears as a result of changes to the body that cause the skin’s elastic fibbers to stretch, weaken and break, — such as rapid growth, weight gain, pregnancy, even cosmetic implants. The width of stretch marks varies from a few millimetres to 1-2 centimetres, while their length might exceed 15-20 centimetres. Stretch marks can happen to both men and women at any age. Usually, women have stretch marks in the thigh, abdomen, hips and breast areas after pregnancy, but we also see it in men in the lumbosacral region, abdomen, thorax and buttocks.
